On June 25th 2019, Wanda Group and UPMC signed their first exclusive international hospital cooperative management agreement. In the agreement, Wanda Group entrusts UPMC to operate and manage Chengdu Wanda UPMC International Hospital ("Hospital") for 20 years. By fully introducing UPMC flagship hospitals’ advanced design, clinical teaching and research platform, culture of quality and safety, as well as the operation and management system, this Hospital will become China's first large world class Sino-foreign cooperative international hospital. Mr. Yin Li, governor of Sichuan Province, Mr. Wang Jianlin, Chairman of Wanda Group, and Mr. Chuck Bogosta, president of UPMC International attended the signing ceremony.
Chengdu Wanda UPMC International Hospital will be located in Tianfu New District. The Hospital, covering an area of 200 mu, with a total construction area of 400,000 square meters will be built and operated in accordance with UPMC’s standards for clinical care and with the goal of achieving Joint Commission International accreditation to ensure the highest quality and safety standards. Wanda Group intends to make a total investment of approximately RMB 6 billion.
The highlights of this cooperative management agreement include plans for UPMC to hire key hospital leaders and medical experts to lead key clinical departments; train physicians and staff in China and Pittsburgh; and integrate qualified Chengdu staff at the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine.
Founded in 1893, UPMC is one of the most renowned academic medical centers in the world. It ranks among the highest of academic hospitals in the United States in terms of revenue and surgery volume, and it is also one of the largest organ transplantation centers in the world. Wanda Group signed a strategic cooperation agreement with UPMC in 2018, in anticipation of establishing 5 international hospitals that will be funded by Wanda and managed by UPMC. The Chengdu Wanda UPMC International Hospital Cooperative Management Agreement will act as a model for the two parties’ cooperation in other cities in China and will accelerate their further hospital development.
With the promotion of "Healthy China", China's healthcare industry is booming, creating a huge space for high-end health care. Chengdu Wanda UPMC International Hospital will fill the gap of top international branded hospitals in western China, boost Chengdu's healthcare industry to reach a world class level, and help Chengdu become the high-end healthcare service center and medical tourism destination in western China. The long-term and close cooperation between Wanda Group and UPMC will create a new model of Sino-foreign cooperation in building and managing top international hospitals, changing the current status quo of so-called international hospitals wherein there is no management or technologies transfer, and only a use of a brand name. Chengdu Wanda UPMC International Hospital is also a breakthrough in the reform of healthcare industry in China, promoting China's medical service industry, and improving the quality of China's high-end healthcare providers by importing the world-class medical services.
